WHAT IS PRIDE?
celebration. activism. justice. pride is a lot of things.
LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, also known as Gay Pride, is a celebration that takes place every June in the United States and around the world. Pride month honors and recognizes the years of civil rights for LGBTQIA+ people and the ongoing fight for equal justice.
Pride also honors the past and current accomplishments of the community and also allows people in that community to feel welcome and celebrate who they are.
Pride is something different for everyone. Whether you're celebrating yourself, a family member, a friend, participating in activism or awareness, or a combination of all of it, Pride is truly the perfect time to do all of those things.
why is pride celebrated in june?
Pride is celebrated in June because of LGBTQIA+ history in the United States. Records of LGBTQIA+ movements date back to at least 1924 with the founding of the Society of Human Rights by Henry Gerber. However, the event that really caused LGBTQIA+ rights to be placed on the main stage was during the Stonewall uprisings, where many LGBTQIA+ people fought for their rights on a much larger scale. This was the spark that lit the flame, and it took place in June 1969, thus being the exact reason why pride is celebrated every June.
